On February 18, 2014, Shin & Kim hosted a seminar entitled “Market Manipulation Issues in Korea” at the Four Seasons Hotel in Hong Kong for officials and employees of financial institutions based in Hong Kong.

The seminar was arranged by Shin & Kim’s Specialized Practice Group on Unfair Securities Trading in celebration of the recent publication of its book, “100 Questions and Answers on Financial Crimes”, on unfair trading of securities, disclosures and transparency in accounting practices. The seminar drew keen interest and participation from many practitioners and professionals in the financial industry in Hong Kong.

In the first session of the seminar, a presentation was given on the topic of the Korean regulatory framework in relation to market manipulation and recent developments.  The second session focused on discussions of three case studies (market manipulation in spot and forward trading, practices of ELS Delta hedging and civil cases arising from market manipulation).

In response to recently tightened investigations and harsher sanctioning of price manipulation and financial crimes in Korea, this seminar was received by the audience as highly informative for the timely introduction of important legal issues pertinent to foreign financial institutions.
